FORUM ON AGEING VISITS COMMISSIONER FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND CHIEFTAINCY AFFAIRS
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon Uzor Nwachukwu, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to improving the lives of the elderly in our society. This statement was made during a courtesy visit from the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) Abia State Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Ageing, as conveyed by Mrs Magdalene Ugoanusi, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The Commissioner emphasized that the current administration has the best interests of the people of the state at heart and encouraged the Forum to actively contribute to the development of Abia State. Hon Nwachukwu assured the group that the government would always prioritize the care and well-being of the elderly, acknowledging their importance in society.
In his remarks, the Co-Chairman/Facilitator of the Forum, Mazi Ottih Nwaka, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for his warm reception and highlighted the Forum's presence and functionality in all the Local Government Areas of the state. The Forum's objective is to ensure that the lives of older persons are guaranteed, hence the desire to establish and integrate the Forum into the state's governance structure.
Mr. Nwaka further emphasized that when elderly individuals have access to adult care and community spaces, they are more likely to engage in physical activities and interact with others, thereby reducing isolation and depression. He called on the government to support the establishment of the Forum in the state, aiming to maintain and improve the overall quality of life for older adults.
Mrs. Queen Ananaba, the acting Secretary of the Forum, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner for his time and urged him to help alleviate the challenges faced by the elderly in society. She also took the opportunity to offer prayers for the success of the present administration.
The visit was attended by members of the Forum from the state.
